WEEE Directive

WEEE Directive.

From 13th August 2005 under the new WEEE regulations HandyHardware DIY will be obligied to take back Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) from members of the public. Handyhardware is fully comitted to comply with all such legislation. These regulations are designed to promote the recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment. They will facilitate in particular the achievement of the targets for the collection, treatment, recovery and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment in an environmentally sound manner established by directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment. The regulations impose obligations on persons who supply electrical and electronic equipment to the Irish market, whether as retailers, importers or manufactures.

How does WEEE work?

Distributors, ie. Retailers, when supplying a new product, must accept back waste electrical and electronic equipment from private households free of charge on a one-to-one basis as long as the waste electrical and electronic equipment is of equivalent type or has fulfilled the same function as the supplied equipment, other than contaminated waste electrical and electronic equipment that presents a health and safety risk unless such contamination is on account of a distributor's liability.

Take back is on a one for one basis only and the product must be of a similar type or have performed the same function as the new item purchased.  For example if you are buying a new drill we will take back your old drill and ensure that it is disposed of in an environmentally correct manner. However if you are buying a drill, you cannot return a toaster, microwave etc in its place.

Why are Enviromental Management Costs displayed?

The whole point of showing Enviromental Managemental Costs is to ensure that the system is transparent. We display the Eviromental Managmental Costs as PRF " Producers Recycling Fund".

What should you do if returning Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment?

If you are returning electrical appliances then you should courier or post the item to our main office at 105 Media Cube, Kill Avenue, Dun Laoghire, Co Dublin. Once you purchase an appliance we will be happy to take back your old appliance once it is of a similar type. We will not be obliged to take back contaminated WEEE that presents a health and safety risk.

What happens if you forget to bring your old appliance with you?

If you are purchasing a new electrical product but forget to bring your old one back on the day of purchase you will have 15 days to return it to our main office. Please ensure you keep your receipt for the new electrical item and present this at the customer service desk when returning the old electrical item.

What happens with home deliveries?

If you are purchasing an electrical item and choosing to get it delivered then you need to return electrical appliances via courier or post the item to our main office at Unit 14, Churchtown Business Park, Churchtown, Dublin 14 on the day of delivery the old appliance once it performs a similar function as the new item purchased.
