Tools You’ll Need:
Step 1: Measure and Mark the Area
Measure the fence line: Use a measuring tape to determine where the fence will be installed.
Mark post locations: Mark each post location with stakes, placing them typically 6 to 8 feet apart (depending on the size of your fence panels).
Create a guide line: Stretch a string line along the marked area to act as a guide for aligning the fence posts.
Step 2: Dig the Post Holes
Dig post holes: Using a post hole digger, dig a hole for each fence post. The depth of the hole should be approximately one-third the height of the post (e.g., for a 6-foot fence, dig about 2 feet deep).
Ensure proper spacing: Make sure each hole is aligned with the string line.
Check for level ground: If your garden is uneven, adjust the depth of the post holes accordingly to maintain an even fence height.
Step 3: Set the Fence Posts
Place the posts in the holes: Insert each post into its hole, making sure it sits at the correct height.
Use a spirit level: Check that each post is perfectly vertical using a spirit level.
Backfill the holes: Fill the hole with soil, or for a sturdier installation, use concrete mix. Tamp down the soil or concrete to secure the post.
Let the concrete cure (if used): Allow the concrete to dry for 24-48 hours before attaching the panels.
Step 4: Attach the Fence Panels
Position the fence panels: Place the fence panels between the posts, ensuring they’re level with the string line.
Cut the panels (if needed): Use a saw to cut panels to the appropriate size, if necessary.
Secure the panels: Use wood screws and a hammer to attach the panels to the posts, ensuring each panel is level before securing them fully.
Step 5: Check Alignment and Finish
Check for alignment: Once all panels are attached, step back and check that the fence is straight and aligned with the string line.
Final adjustments: If any panels are crooked, loosen the screws and adjust before tightening them again.
Finish up: If you used concrete for the posts, remove any excess once it’s set, and tidy up the surrounding area.
Your garden fence is now installed!
