How To Hang Shelves Like A Pro

Tools Needed:

Spirit level

Drill

Wall plugs (appropriate for your wall type)

Screws

Screwdriver set

Pencil

Measuring tape

Step 1: Choose Your Location

Select the spot where you want to hang your shelves.

Consider weight: Ensure the wall can support the weight of the shelves and items you’ll place on them.

Use a stud finder if you’re mounting heavy shelves on drywall, as screwing into wall studs adds extra support.

Step 2: Measure and Mark

Measure the height where the shelf will be installed.

Use a pencil to mark where the brackets or shelf will go.

Place the spirit level horizontally across the marks to ensure the shelf will be straight. Adjust the marks if needed.

Step 3: Check Bracket Placement

If your shelf uses brackets, hold the brackets in place over the marks and ensure they are level.

Mark the drill holes through the bracket holes on the wall with your pencil.

Step 4: Drill Holes

Choose the correct drill bit size for the wall plugs you’re using.

Drill into the wall at the marks you made for the screws.

Be careful to drill straight and to the appropriate depth (usually the length of the wall plug).

Step 5: Insert Wall Plugs

Gently tap the wall plugs into the holes you drilled using a hammer, ensuring they sit flush with the wall.

Wall plugs prevent screws from loosening over time, especially in plasterboard or brick walls.

Step 6: Screw in the Brackets

Align the brackets with the drilled holes and screw them into place using the power drill or screwdriver.

Ensure the brackets are secure and tight, as they will hold the weight of the shelf.

Step 7: Mount the Shelf

Place the shelf onto the brackets or over the screws, depending on your shelf type.

If using adjustable brackets, you may need to screw the shelf to the brackets for additional stability.

Step 8: Final Level Check

Once the shelf is mounted, place the spirit level on top of the shelf to make sure it is perfectly straight.

If it’s not level, you may need to adjust the screws or brackets slightly.

Step 9: Tighten and Secure

After ensuring everything is level, tighten any screws and make final adjustments to guarantee the shelf is secure and stable.

Step 10: Enjoy Your Shelf

Place your items on the shelf and admire your handy work!
